Ernie Ranoff, the so-called Chief Pigeon-Breeder of Wall Street, has been arrested.
For perhaps thirty years, wealthy pigeon racers who needed somewhere to breed their birds with the best racing stock turned to the services of Ernie Ranoff.
They would send their birds to Ernie, who would apparently breed them, and then, should the investor require it, return more pigeons than the breeder had originally suppled, for the races.
Many investors sent Ernie one or two birds a month, and over the years, they regularly took back more than they had put in.
The breeding rates seemed phenomenal - whilst a pigeon might be expected to produce at most twenty young a year, Ernie's skills were such that the birds would produce over a hundred.
Breeders, of course, were delighted to keep sending Ernie their birds. Ernie brought in the creatures, took a slice from the racing profits, and everyone made a fortune.
It wasn't until investigators from the Special Internal Pigeon Committee (SIPC) began to look at the breeding records that the pigeon-house of cards began to wobble.
It has now been revealed to be a huge Ponzi scheme.
Ernie was never breeding the pigeons, just keeping them in a filing cabinet in his office. If an investor wanted a few back, that was ok, he was able to provide them.
As long as more breeders were regularly providing him with stock this could go on indefinitely. The new birds were, if needed, presented as Ernie's breeding success from the older ones.
The SIPC's suspicions that all was not well were confirmed, when a midnight raid on Ernie's office revealed just a few dozen birds. They were expecting thousands.
Should more than two or three breeders have required pigeons back at the same time, Ernie would have been sunk.
Ernie Ranoff is now awaiting trial for pigeon-laundering.
Across the world, in what has been dubbed Feathergate, hundreds of pigeon breeders have lost everything.
The Trustee in charge of winding up Ernie Ranoff's firm will be looking at those who have previously feathered their nests, some decades ago.
He will now be asking for the odd wing or tail back again, in order to redistribute the losses fairly.
