Australia news live: Clive Palmer’s mining company gave $116m to United Australia party in election lead-up, donations data reveals
Australian Electoral Commission releases annual look at political donations data. Follow the day’s news The deputy prime minister and defence minister, Richard Marles, spoke to ABC AM Radio from London following a meeting with the UK prime minister, Rishi Sunak. Marles would not be drawn into whether he discussed with Sunak the possibility of Australia acquiring British built nuclear submarines under the Aukus deal but said when the announcement is made it will be a “genuinely trilateral effort.” Prime Minister Sunak commented on just how full the agenda is between our two countries and how much that is making – perhaps our oldest and most historic relationship – one which is deeply relevant in in the contemporary moment and certainly Aukus is central to that. And we’re close to announcement and I’m not about to preempt that now. But I think what you’ll see is when we ultimately do announce the optimal pathway that we’ve been working on with both the United States and United Kingdom, that what it really is, is a genuinely trilateral effort to see by the UK and the US provide Australia with a nuclear powered submarine capability. We’re confident that what we will be announcing in the coming weeks is a pathway that will be able to be delivered by all partners on time. Continue reading... Tue, 31 Jan 2023 23:45:05 GMT

Length of time someone has lived in Australia will be taken into account when considering whether to deport Kiwis who have been sentenced to a year or more in prison Australia’s immigration minister, Andrew Giles, has told his department to overhaul its approach to deporting New Zealand citizens who have spent more than one year in an Australian prison. Australia’s deportation of dual-citizens on character grounds has been a longstanding source of frustration for the New Zealand government, which has strongly campaigned for a change in policy. US accuses Russia of violating key nuclear arms control treaty
Washington condemns Moscow for what it says is a ‘refusal to facilitate inspection activities’ regarding New Start treaty The United States has accused Russia of violating the New Start treaty, the last major pillar of post cold-war nuclear arms control between the two countries, saying Moscow was refusing to allow inspection activities on its territory. The treaty came into force in 2011 and was extended in 2021 for five more years. It caps the number of strategic nuclear warheads that the United States and Russia can deploy, and the deployment of land- and submarine-based missiles and bombers to deliver them. Russia-Ukraine war: France to send extra howitzers; military casualties from both sides ‘total 200,000’ – as it happened
This live blog has now closed, you can read the latest from the war in Ukraine here Ukraine’s state broadcaster Suspilne offers this summary of events of the last 24 hours in its Telegram bulletin today. It writes: At night, Russian troops shelled the Nikopol district of the Dnipropetrovsk region. Three private houses, farm buildings and a power line were damaged. There are no injured. Over the past day, three people were injured in Donetsk region due to Russian shelling. In the Zaporizhzhia region, 14 settlements were shelled during the day, seven in the Kherson region. In the last three days, Russia has likely developed its probing attacks around the towns of Pavlivka and Vuhledar into a more concerted assault. Russian commanders are likely aiming to develop a new axis of advance into Ukrainian-held Donetsk Oblast, and to divert Ukrainian forces from the heavily contested Bakhmut sector. There is a realistic possibility that Russia will continue to make local gains in the sector. However, it is unlikely that Russia has sufficient uncommitted troops in the area to achieve an operationally significant breakthrough. Continue reading... Tue, 31 Jan 2023 18:55:12 GMT

US and UK rule out sending F-16 fighter jets to Ukraine
Refusals deal significant blow to Kyiv’s efforts to bolster military capability in war with Russia Western allies appear to have retreated from supplying F-16 and other western fighter jets to Ukraine over the past 24 hours, with the UK joining the US in quashing Kyiv’s hopes it could obtain the jets soon after the west agreed to send it tanks. US president, Joe Biden, when asked at the White House late on Monday if his country would provide F-16s, answered simply “no”, although he emphasised on Tuesday morning he would remain in discussions with Ukraine about its weapons requests. Gautam Adani falls out of world top 10 rich list as his companies’ shares slide
Abu Dhabi fund’s $400m investment in Indian group fails to stop fall in value after fraud allegations The Indian billionaire Gautam Adani has fallen off the list of the world’s top 10 richest people as the value of shares in his companies continue to slide after an activist investor accused him of “pulling the largest con in corporate history”. He has fallen to 11th place in the daily-updated Bloomberg billionaires index after a personal wealth wipeout of $34bn in just four days of trading since the accusations were published.

Unsentenced prisoners make up a third of Australia’s prison population as bail refusals boom
Advocates urge overhaul of laws to ensure people aren’t needlessly funnelled into jail The number of unsentenced people in Australian jails has risen more than 120% over 10 years, to account for more than a third of the total prison population, as human rights advocates urge reforms to ensure people aren’t needlessly funnelled into the criminal justice system. More than 15,000 prisoners, or about 35% of the nation’s prison population, were unsentenced – awaiting trial, sentencing or deportation – in 2021. In 2011, when there were 6,723 unsentenced prisoners, that cohort accounted for less than 25% of the prison population. ‘Storm the house’: Queensland care home receives threats after being wrongly identified as halfway house
Online posts urge violence against residents after premises described as a place for ‘youth offenders’ Children living in a Queensland residential care home were the subject of death threats on social media – including calls for neighbours to “storm the house” and “hang whoever is inside” – after media reports incorrectly claimed the premises was a halfway house for young criminals. The head of the Queensland family and child commission, Scott Twyford, said last week he was “deeply concerned” at public sentiment which called for more punitive responses to youth crime in the face of clear evidence that “tough” approaches did not work. Venezuela: fears new bill will put stranglehold on civil society
Legislation would force organisations to provide financial records to government with threat of bans for political or security reasons New legislation proposed by the Venezuelan government to regulate civil society groups would kill the last functioning remnant of the country’s democracy and take it a step closer to a police state, leading NGOs have warned. The bill passed its first reading in the country’s legislature on Tuesday and, if approved in a second reading, will obligate NGOs to provide the government with all their financial records so that their political agendas and funding can be scrutinised. Weather tracker: Cheneso restrengthens to bring flooding to Madagascar
Tropical storm upgraded to cyclone status, hitting Indian Ocean island with 75mph winds and intense rainfall Madagascar continued to be hit by intense rainfall this week, resulting in serious flooding and several landslides. Severe Tropical Storm Cheneso made landfall in the north-east last week, and had weakened as it pushed south-west across the island. But after reaching the warm waters of the Mozambique channel on Monday, Cheneso restrengthened, achieving tropical cyclone status by Wednesday with sustained wind speeds of 75mph, equivalent to a category 1 hurricane. Unusually, the system remained near-stationary for almost four days, stalling just off the west coast of Madagascar and bringing more than 100mm of rain each day to some coastal areas. Cheneso’s lack of movement resulted in weakening of the system on Thursday, as upwelling of cooler water beneath the storm reduced the energy available to the cyclone, and sustained winds decreased to about 55mph. The storm has now started to accelerate to the south, and begun the process of curving out towards the southern Indian Ocean. Cheneso may briefly restrengthen during this period, before becoming extratropical by Monday. Continue reading... Fri, 27 Jan 2023 09:18:00 GMT
